a chain of inequality
Layout and design of a book with the focus on telling a story about the failing War on Drugs, racial disparity in sentencing, and overcrowding in prisons in the United States. Content was taken from Eugene Jarecki's documentary "The House I Live In" and the article "Act One: Weeds of Discontent" by NPR's This American Life. Design help provided by Kristin Hughes and printing help by Dylan Vitone.
This project spoke about the hidden costs of and unknown connections between money, greed, drugs, power, race, and jobs within our country. I tried to display the information I gathered as immediately and as simply as I could, connecting imagery and data to tell the deeper story of these terrible problems. It was a great challenge to work through this because I had basically no knowledge of any of these failures going in to the project, but I think that by going through the whole process of learning all of the material while starting to make decision I was better able to figure out a final language and concept. Like I repeat in the book, I hope that it can serve as a reminder to fix what we have already done wrong and continue to change it for the future.
